Transvaginal Mesh Erosion

Mesh erosion, exposure, extrusion, or protrusion

Transvaginal mesh erosion occurs when the mesh wears through or erodes the tissue of the vaginal wall and becomes exposed. This incident may also be known as transvaginal protrusion, exposure, or extrusion.

If mesh erosion occurs, multiple surgeries may be necessary to repair it. Symptoms of mesh erosion may include severe pain, bleeding, and pain during sexual intercourse. Pain may continue to persist, even after the mesh is removed.

The most common complication

According to a 2011 FDA Safety Communication mesh erosion “is the most common and consistently reported mesh-related complication from transvaginal POP surgeries using mesh.” The FDA also notes that they received 1,503 reports of complications associated with mesh used in POP repairs between January 2008 and December 2010.
